Awaiting the Twins!

I'm not usually the subject of photos on this blog, and I am pretty happy about that arrangement. BUT, we are SO thrilled and thankful to be expecting our two little boys any day now, and we wanted to share the news in photos!! Mike and my dear friend Shawna took a few maternity photos of me/us last weekend (at about 35 weeks) to document this crazy special time in our lives. Thank you, Shawna, sweet friend, for sharing your talents with us! Thank you, Mike, for being a husband who fills my heart daily beyond anything for which I could have hoped or imagined. I am already preparing to be amazed by the father that you will be to these little men. Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with these two precious babies that we can't wait to meet! (and please give us strength.) ;)

I was so excited to be able to shoot sweet Joel's first official photographs! He is such a precious baby and a true blessing! These were taken on Joel's 9 day birthday. For those of you who'd like to schedule newborn photos, just wanted to mention that it's best to schedule those to be taken when your sweet baby is 10 days or younger (when they're at their sleepiest, very bendy, and before any baby blemishes set in).

Melissa and Justin: Friendswood Baptist Church and White House Ranch Wedding

Some couples meet at their local gym. Some at a coffee shop around the corner. That would have been a little too easy for Melissa and Justin. They met at a conference about faith a thousand miles away from each of their homes in Houston and Alberta, Canada. After months of endearing letters, daily emails, tender telephone conversations, and hopeful prayers, a sweet friendship matured into a great love and a promise to share the best and most difficult of life. We were thrilled to share in such a celebration of love and God's grace.

Congratulations Melissa and Justin! We are sending out big hugs to you in Canada! Texas misses you already. :)

Melissa and Justin: Mayfield Park and Downtown Austin Engagement

Melissa and Justin drove in from Houston (technically, Justin actually flew in from Canada) for their engagement session, and they endured Austin weather's finicky side with grace, style and considerable pizzaz. It rained throughout the session, but Melissa and Justin didn't let a little precip interfere with their engagement magic. Mike and I had so much fun hanging out with them, and the time flew by so fast that we couldn't believe when it was time for the session to end. Thankfully, we'll get to see them again soon!

Erika and Frank clearly know how to plan a party! The Hoffman Haus was hopping all night long in celebration of the sweet newlyweds. I would also like to note, for the record, that every single person at the reception knew how to light it up on the dance floor. Serious skills in these families! Nancy and Ben are getting married and could not be more in love! Their adoration for one another and sense of FUN made for a fabulous engagement session at Zilker Botanical Gardens. Nancy has been our church's Women's Minister for the past several years, and her wisdom and heart for God and others have been such an encouragement to me. It wasn't that long ago, as a group of ladies were sharing requests for prayer, that we prayed that God would bring an amazing man into Nancy's life. God definitely delivered on that request! I was beyond thrilled when she told me of her engagement to Ben. As I think is clear from the photos, Nancy and Ben are such a blast to spend time with. Mike was so engaged in conversation with the lovebirds, I was afraid that I was going to have to include him in their photos. ;) We can't wait for your big day!!

Alison and Michael have been sweethearts since grade school, and as we listened to the toasts, it became readily apparent that Michael has sweetly held Alison's hand since the time she held her Harry Potter lunchbox in the other! From what I could ascertain, even from their time in braces, there was little doubt that they'd be holding hands as they walked down the proverbial aisle one day. And what a day! Their wedding was sooooo much fun it made me want to get married all over again...to Mix Master Mike, of course...but with all of these colors and bright, spunky (amazing) flowers! Keri and her team at Leave the Details to Me made sure that the day was not only beautiful, but seamless! At one point rain clouds seemed to be lurking in the sky like an uninvited guest. I'm pretty sure Keri managed to coerce it to find another corner, because its presence was short-lived and perfectly timed. I know this post is pretty photo heavy, but since we pay the bills around here, I decided to indulge just this once. ;) forgive me?

We have loved getting to know Rob, Shirley and their sweet boys during their annual photo session! There are some smiles in this world that reach right into your heart and give it a squeeze. I was blessed to photograph not one, but an identical TWO, of those super sweet smiles. Isaak and Jakob are wholly adorable (see for yourself!) four year old twins, and they recently moved to the US from the Dominican Republic where their Mom's ministry is focused. Sharla is the Executive Director (and founder, by the by!) of Makarios, a faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to educational development in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and other impoverished areas around the world. Sharla is not only a gifted entrepreneur with an inspiring heart motivated by a true love for people and an eternal perspective, she is also an amazing mom! I have a feeling it was love at first sight when she met these little guys for the first time. Who could resist those smiles, after all!

Family Fun with the Dawsons!

As Mike and I were prepping our gear and looking forward to our yearly session with the fun Dawson family, we were thinking about how cool it is to get to see little Will and Kate growing up each Spring. What we didn't realize until that day, is that the Dawson family is growing in other big ways. Laura and Tim have another sweet little one on the way! We absolutely love getting to document families as they grow! During our session, Laura told us the sweetest story. Ever. A week or so before Laura found out she was expecting, 4 year old little Will told her that he had a dream that God told him that she was pregnant. Laura and Tim didn't really think so, but were absolutely blown away when they later found out he had been absolutely right! After they heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time, they told Will the big news. His reply: "I know. That's the reason your tummy has been hurting Mommy. God's hands have been in your tummy making the baby." Wow.

Kakey is Graduating!

My niece, Kaitlyn, has survived 12 years at my own alma mater the Highland School system, and she's set to graduate this spring! She's walked a long road since the days when our family referred to our once firey-tempered little sweetie as "Saitlyn." (affectionately, of course.) In those days, it wasn't Sunday after-church-lunch if Kaitlyn wasn't red-faced and crying for a 'big quarter' to put in the little toy vending machines. She grew out of her temper-tantrum phase and marched proudly into the phase whereby she used her baby blues, twinkling smile, and melodically oft-repeated phrase ("I like your outfit") to get out of trouble. (And who could resist? She was a-dorable!)

I can't pinpoint exactly when it happened, but at some point, Kaitlyn gracefully strolled into the chapter of her life where she grew into one of the most sweet-spirited people I know....one who whole-heartedly adores and cares for others, seeks to live a spirit-filled life, and absolutely loves to laugh (and seriously golfs like a pro!). I'm proud to say that she now uses those baby blues for good, and not evil. ;)

We love you Kakey and are so proud of you! You hear it said in every.single.graduation.speech for a reason: it's true. So, throwing novelty to the wind, I say, as important and amazing as your road thus far has been, your journey is truly just beginning!

We had to do one angst-filled teenager shots! :) I just loved how the sun hit her eye...

Loved the golden light in this set...here's my secret weapon. My mom (or Nona to Kaitlyn) was working the diffuser and reflector....

Michelle and Luke: engaged!

Mike here, stepping in for Courtney as a guest blogger (I hear all the cool kids are doing it now) to write about the latest engagement shoot featuring one of my all time favorite people, my little sister Michelle. Sometimes when I think of her, I still see my three year old kid sister in her car seat, playing gently with her dolls and bundled up like the Michelin Man to keep warm in those harsh Pittsburgh winters. It's hard to imagine that she's grown into the beautiful woman that I now see in these pictures. I notice that if I look closely enough and stare beyond her outer beauty, I can still see the sensitive and sweet little girl who smiles often, laughs easily, is kind to animals and cares deeply for her family, friends and even those she doesn't personally know. Michelle is a lot like my other younger kid sister Marsha, which is probably why the two of them are still such great friends.

It's been so great to watch Michelle's spiritual growth over the last few years. I'm so happy she has found such a great guy in Luke with whom she can continue that spiritual journey. Someone once said (if I paid more attention in school I'd probably know who it was) that the 'journey of a thousand miles begins with one step'. I hope Michelle and Luke will be able to look back at these pictures in the years to come with fond memories of a beautiful young couple who took their first step together.

The sun shone brightly and the breeze was gentle and fresh. I'm sure that the out of town guests were wondering what all the fuss had been about Texas' crazy weather because this day, Heather and Peter's wedding day, was the most perfect! The day was blessed from the first pre-nuptial hug that was exchanged that happy day to the last!

They exchanged vows at First Presbyterian Church and their reception at the beautiful Vista at Seward Hill.

Sweet little man Braden has made his grand entrance into both this world and the hearts of anyone who has met him. Jana and Daniel: Wedding

Jana and Daniel are married, and Mike and I loved sharing the day with two people with such sweet spirits! It's not much of a groundbreaking observation, but it's easy to notice when many of the common things shared by the individual souls of a couple are tangible: hobbies, favorite sports team, volunteer work. Jana and Daniel, no doubt, have a million of those fun and important things in common. In fact, they both happen to be medical students with a practice focus in pathology. BUT, the most obvious shared trait that we noticed that day was the way they looked at one another with tender adoration and sweetness. Absolutely perfect and one of the reasons this job is so amazing!

In the shade of the tall, proud oak trees at Angel Springs Event Center, Becky and Russell recently exchanged their long-awaited wedding vows as witnessed by the teary eyes of their friends and family who had traveled from near and far. Both Becky and Russell have such sweet, gentle spirits, and it's so exciting to think about all the ways they'll bless others through their marriage. I know Mike and I were so blessed just to capture the moments when their marriage came to be.

Martha and her fabulous team from Your Very Own Fairy Godmother coordinated the day so that everything was pleasant, beautiful, and right on time!

Kelly and Allen are engaged and soooooo in love! They came down from D.C. for a fun engagement session all around downtown Austin. Kelly is a fabulous photographer (no pressure!) ;), so we knew we would have a ton of fun during their session. Kelly and I met about a year ago over coffee/hot chocolate to talk about photography, business, cameras, and other nerderies. Amy's Bridal

I was so excited to shoot Amy's post-wedding bridal portraits at Laguna Gloria. Because we scheduled these for after Amy's big day, she didn't have to worry about keeping her dress in pristine condition. So, despite the fact that it was soooooo chilly and windy that morning, Amy was able to relax and work her photo mojo. :)

She was also considered a superstar on the grounds by all the visitors (and rightly so!).... Everywhere we went, little girls stared and smiled like they were in the presence of a fairyland princess and people ooohed and ahhed about the delicate beauty of both the bride and her dress. While I was packing up my lights, one gentleman even came to ask me in what magazine he could see the photos. He didn't blink an eye when I told him he could see them in Vogue. ;)

Adorable, fun, and perfect for each other, Becky and Russell are getting married! Their story attests to the underpinnings of truth in the tenet: timing is everything! And, by timing, I mean God's perfect plan. Years before they ever thought about the possibility of dating, Becky and Russell were friends and part of a group of peers who met weekly to pray, laugh, and study scripture together. At the time, neither had any idea that they were also spending some QT with the person that would eventually make one another's heart go pitter pat! One day, years after the group stopped formally meeting, something clicked inside both Becky and Russell. At the same time, each of them felt the romantic flames a-brewing...and they have been inseparable ever since.

We had sooooo much fun shooting Russell and Becky's engagement photos and can't wait for the big wedding!!

Hooray! Jennifer and Doug are married! We had been looking forward to this day for a long time, and it was well worth the wait. Jennifer and Doug were all smiles the entire day and sooooooo in love. Every detail was expertly crafted by Resha and her team from 36th Street Events, and guests came from near and far to enjoy the celebration. It was a gorgeous day for an awesome couple!

Dawson Fam!

We had another fun day with the sweet Dawson family! I can't believe how much Will has grown since we shot their family session a little over a year ago! Not only has Will grown, but so has the family in general. Kate is the most recent blessing/addition to the family, and it's clear how much Will loves his little sister. Such a sweet big brother. Lord willing, we will definitely be asking Tim and Laura for their awesome parenting tips one day! :)

Amy and Daniel are married!

People came from near (downtown Austin) and far (Germany and Arizona) to celebrate Amy and Daniel and their truest of love for one another. The day began and ended as a celebration of the obvious love that God had brought together, and it was so much fun to be a part of it all. It was so much fun, in fact, I think Mike and I were two of the last three to leave that day (props to the hilarious Tim as well). :) Amy and Daniel (et al) were so much fun to shoot, in part, I think because they are sooooo, sooooo happy. Their smiles were unfading and their snuggling unending, which makes for good times when it comes to photos. Another fun aspect of the day was that Daniel and his groomsmen were totally digging the cam. Sometimes, I think, the men at a wedding have a sort of "I'll participate in these photos, but I don't have to love it" kind of inclination (at least at the beginning of the group shots...until they realize that Mike and I are the most fun ever). ;) BUT, Daniel and his fellows were so ready for their close-up from the first click of the shutter. They were even throwing out ideas for additional poses and were sad when we told them they had to give the ladies a turn in front of the lens. Not to be outdone, the ladies worked it out as well.

There are so many things about shooting family portraits that make me smile. A few of those things would be the goofy noises, faces, and shooting positions Mike and I throw out there to get a laugh out of the kiddos. Sweet little Alex was SO smart, and by the end of the session he was making some of my signature 'noises' to make us laugh. Too adorable! We had so much fun documenting this day in the life of such a sweet family.
